Foraging for Wild Edibles and Wildflowers

If this were the Olympic Talk in the Fields, Kevin Faccenda would have swept top medals for 2019: First, Last, and Most, with 5—June, July, August, September, and October. Kevin again led a group through Homefields’ property, identifying and gathering historic plants used as food (and our wildflowers). Core concepts of wild plant identification were covered through hands-on demonstration along with materials such as field guides and plant keys. The local and in-season wild plants which are most useful and tasteful edibles was the focus of the talk.

If there is a plant left on Homefields’ acreage that Kevin didn’t bring to your attention, then it most likely is not edible.

Kevin Faccenda is a student of botany at Millersville University. He is focusing on learning the plants of Southeast PA and has been studying plant identification for 8 years.

For Homefields' first "Talks in the Fields" of 2019, Kevin Faccenda spoke about how to recognize and gather historic plants used as food. Here's a small clip. Each month, he will introduce different wild edibles, showing core concepts of wild plant identification through hands-on demonstration along with using materials such as field guides and plant keys.
